The Academic Advisory Board
Current and Former Members, Autumn 2009
The Academic Advisory Board advises the Rector on all academic matters. The Rector discusses with the Board a high proportion of academic considerations, particularly the recommendations needed for Fellows' appointment. The Board consists of a) at least nine but no more than 15 internationally recognized academics, elected - on the Rector's suggestion - for a period of three years by the Members' Assembly and with the possibility of immediate re-election, b) up to three persons elected by the Members' Assembly from within the group, whose terms of office are fixed by the Members' Assembly.
Georges Duby, the great French historian (1919-1996),
was the Board's first chairman for the first four years. After his death,
he
was followed by Heinrich Ursprung, former Swiss State Secretary for Science
and Research, President of the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich
and a biologist by education. Between 1999 and 2003, the present Chair
of the European Research Advisory Board (EURAB)
and former Permanent Fellow of Collegium Budapest, Helga Nowotny, Professor
emeritus of Professor of
Philosophy and Social Studies of Science at ETH Zürich, and Director of
Collegium Helveticum, headed the Board. Between 2003 and 2006 this
position had been filled by Jacques Revel, former President of and Professor
of History at the Ecole
des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris. Since May
2006, Tim Crane, Professor of Philosophy at the University of London,
has been chairing the board.
The list of current and former Board members given below illustrates how board exemplifies highest academic standards in the international academic community. The Board meets each November to consider the applications and make recommendations to the Rector. Between two meetings, the Collegium regularly sends incoming applications to the Board members, who evaluate and return them with comments and recommendations.
