Terms of Stay Every Fellows' rights and obligations are stipulated
by an agreement between the Rector and him/her. The Academic Year at
the Collegium starts on 1 October and ends on 31 July. Two of the few
conditions pertaining to Fellowships at the Collegium are that Fellows
must pursue their research and take part in the academic life of the
Collegium while they are in residence. In particular, attendance at the
weekly Fellow seminars needs to be considered a matter of intellectual
courtesy. Fellows are, therefore, asked to announce absences, which should
not exceed a week at any one time and a total of 30 days in the course
of the academic year. Longer absences should be discussed with the Rector
in advance. However, repeated shorter absences, or a prolonged absence
of a week or longer would present a significant problem. Since October 2000, Collegium Budapest has disposed of its own accommodation
at the "Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse". One of the central ideas
of an Institute for Advanced Study is to create a solid community whose
members are spanning across every discipline. Having a single building
that provides accommodation for the institute's Fellows and their families
in close proximity to the Collegium serves exactly this purpose of socialization.
In addition to its central role of inviting scholars from abroad, Collegium Budapest is keen to establish close connections with the Hungarian academia. For instance, since the outset the Collegium has enjoyed the active participation of Hungarian scholars interested in meeting its Fellows and invited lecturers. This usually takes the form of debates after lectures, which often lead to lively exchanges of ideas and thoughtful discussions. For the purpose of bringing together scholars with diverse backgrounds,
Collegium Budapest regularly organizes seminars, conferences and guest
lectures - inviting either locally known celebrities or reputed scholars
from all over the world, who hold positions of scientific leadership
- where both local and international participants engage in intellectual
inquiry. These and the numerous other joint events, organised with local
universities, Hungarian academic, and cultural institutions, serve as
a vivid illustration of Collegium Budapest's responsibility to mediate
between the local and international academic worlds. Core Fellows, Junior Fellows and Residential Scholars are invited on the assumption that they accept the rules of the institute, including their obligation to be in residence. The staff of the Collegium assists Fellows in their daily lives. Services
include: A common lunch and several dinners are served to stimulate an atmosphere of socialization and collegial exchange in an informal setting. The relevant costs are usually deducted from Fellows' stipends or are charged to them. Collegium Budapest is housed in a building of historical heritage, the former city hall of Buda. This idyllic building offers a total of 30 workplaces in single offices and multi-user rooms with two to four desk units. Office desks are equipped with computers and telephones. If a Fellow prefers working in his apartment, or if the number of desks is insufficient at the institute, Collegium Budapest will provide a computer in the Fellow's apartment. Collegium Budapest provides each Fellow with a monthly allowance of 50 Euros to support research conducted at the institute. Funds in this account cannot be spent on other purposes. The Collegium charges Fellows for the use of mail, telephone, fax and photocopy. A Fellow's expense account is primarily intended to defray these charges. The limit on the expense account is adjusted to the number of months a Fellow spends in residence. |
